Setting Up Manual Upsell & Cross-Sell Rules
Manual rules let you hand-pick exactly which products are recommended for any source product — overriding or supplementing the auto-FBT engine with your own merchandising decisions.
Opening the Recommendations Dashboard
- Open your store from the main dashboard
- Click Upsells in the store navigation (Analytics & Growth section)
- You'll land on the Manual Rules tab
Looking Up a Product
The dashboard is organised per source product — you look up one product at a time and manage its rules.
- Paste the Product ID into the "Source Product ID" field
- Click Load — the page shows all current rules for that product
You can find a product's ID in the Products section of your store dashboard. It's the string starting with prod_ shown in the product detail URL.
Adding a Rule
After loading a product's rules, scroll to Add Recommendation:

| Discount value | Enter a number if you chose % off or fixed amount |
Click Add Rule to save. The rule appears in the table immediately.
Rule Types Explained
Cross-sell — shown in the cart drawer and on the product page. Use this for complementary products ("you're buying shoes → add socks").
Upsell — shown on the product page. Use this for premium alternatives ("you're viewing the basic version → here's the pro version with more features").
Frequently Bought Together (FBT) — shown on the product page. Use this to manually pin FBT products before the auto-engine has enough data, or to prioritise specific pairings.
Rule Position
Rules are displayed in the order they were added (ascending position). The table shows each rule's current position number. Use the dashboard to delete and re-add rules to reorder them.
Keep it to 4 recommendations per product maximum. More than 4 choices creates decision paralysis and typically lowers add-to-cart rates.
Deleting a Rule
Click the trash icon on the right side of any rule row. The rule is removed immediately — no confirmation dialog.
Discount Incentives
Attaching a discount makes the recommendation more compelling but also means you're reducing margin on the recommended product. A good starting point:
- 10% off for upsells (the customer is upgrading, so a small discount seals the deal)
- No discount for cross-sells (complementary products often sell without incentive)
- Free shipping for orders close to a threshold (works well with CartProgressBar)
How Rules Interact with Auto-FBT
Manual rules and auto-FBT are merged on product pages:
- Manual rules for the product are shown first (in position order)
- Auto-FBT results fill remaining slots up to the configured
limit
If a product has 2 manual cross-sell rules and the component is set to show 4, it shows your 2 rules plus 2 auto-FBT results.
